'Sadness accrues': James Gandolfini RIP

Sad to hear about the sudden death of actor James Gandolfini. Every news story about this mentions his role as Tony in HBO mob drama The Sopranos, and that's no surprise. David Chase created a great part on the page [and directed the pilot], but it was Gandolfini who gave the character life and humanity, who made you care about Tony.

Twelve years ago I wrote an unofficial programme guide to seasons 1-3 of The Sopranos, so I spent a lot of time watching Gandolfini on screen. He gives an amazing performance, full of rage and sadness - and plenty of humour. Watch the short clip above and see how many emotions Gandolfini conveys in two minutes. It's a masterclass. RIP.
